Columbia U Intro for www.speedreading101.org

Nov. Introduction @ Columbia
·      1. Do NOT do a reading TEST of the class. Lose the speed.
·      2. Step One: is holding the page at a “30%” angle. It helps your eyes focus clearly, avoid blurring & watering.
·      3. Step Two: is Intentionally Moving your head left-to-right (vestibule-ocular-reflex) keeps your words centered on retina for sharpness (acuity).
·      4. Use a Pointer/Pacer  to trace across the words of the sentences, down the paragraphs. Why? Avoid losing your ‘place’ on the page of text 5-6x per page. Improve your “Attention-Span” 41% for better comprehension & long-term memory.
·      5. What is a Pointer/Pacer? Use a Pen/Pencil/index finger, Laser-Pointer (Raster-Master) on Print. Online, use the Cursor like the Laser-Point to scan across the sentences.
·      6. You are still ‘school-reading’ (snailing) reading one-word-at-a-time. It’s Better because you are doubling (2x) your reading speed, but there is no increase in long-term memory nor comprehension produced by SpeedReading101.com

·      7. Today You started reading text material at 150 words-per-minute. That’s average for college students, including college graduates in the U.S.
·      The use of the Pointer, holding the page at a 30 degree, & intentionally moving your head left-to-right, back-and-forth, Doubles (2x) your reading-speed to 320 words per minute. Same comprehension, same long-term memory.
·      8. Q. Is the expression, ‘No pain, no-gain.’ scientific?
·      9. A. The correct expression would be “No-discomfort, no-personal-growth.” Why? Fear-of-Change is hard-wired in our brain. To improve & grow requires change, and it change causes stress, anxiety & fear.
·      10. Speedreading101 strategies Enlarge your comfort-zone permanently.
·      11. Why do we all expect change (improvement) to be
S-L-O-W, gradual, and hard?
·      12. We don’t notice small improvements (kaizen) unless we are intentionally searching for them or others point it out. “Hey, you finished that report (article) or chapter like a brainiac, what’s up?”
·      13. What’s “Psychological-Distance”?
·      14. Answer: Your ‘Attitude’, Expectation, & subjective mood are your Mind-Set. So what? When you Distance yourself from the difficulty, exam or problem, the “feeling of difficulty” is reduced.
·      Weird example: lean back in your seat mentally removes you from the problem. Stand up and move away from .different city. The beaches of Miami, not streets of NYC.
·      15.  You need 3-character traits for Success in your “Knowledge-Economy”:
·      a) Motivation – your goal. b) Volition (willpower & intention). c) “Grit (persistence), no quit.” ‘C’ is the killer.
·      16. “If you don’t ‘implement’ by buying the $2 ticket, it’s 100 to 1 you will Not win.” Implement new behaviors.
·      17. First-step is to give yourself Permission to change. It’s called “mindset”, attitude, & belief. It’s a choice to ‘begin’ or remain in your ‘comfort-zone’.
·      18. It’s You who decides to give up resistence & old habits. You must overcome programming by others to find a new way. It can happen in a millisecond or never.
·      19. “The only secure knowledge is that I exist.” (Solipcism) – Rene Descartes.
·      20. “I am a thing that thinks, that is to say a thing that doubts, affirms, denies, understands a few things is ignorant about many things, wills, refrains from willing,
And also images and senses.” R. Descartes.
That’s it for now. See ya,

How to ADD 51% to your Long-term Memory - Permanently

How to ADD 51% to Your Long-Term Memory – Permanently
·      1. This is a conversation I had with my teenager, Mike
about a system we teach at our one-day workshop at
Columbia University.
·      It helps our graduates ACE school & their careers. It works for kids age 10, to high school, college & grad-school. We train corporate executive with this strategy.

·       2. Me: “Michael, you’re a good high school student without my help. Would you be interested is learning a baby-easy system to improve your comprehension & long-term memory about 51%, permanently?

·      3. Me: It’s for college, grad-school & your career. It gives you a unique competitive-edge so you ace your exams & grades.

·      4. Me: At work, you will stand out for promotions, & bonuses. Question: it’s Ok if you are not interested in more work. So, yes or no?”

·      5. Mike “Pop, how long does it take to learn, and how hard to use?”

·      6. Me: “Kid, it takes 6-minutes to figure out, and 5-minutes to use in action after you finish an article, lecture or book. Look, if you don’t need, forget about it.”
A
·      7. Mike: “I won’t say No without knowing more. What’s it called?”

·      8. Me: “Six Wh’s & a How?” It uses Seven Questions to answer by taking short, brief notes after you finish a lecture, article or book, to remember it for ten-years

·      9. Mike: ”Just write a few words as answers to seven questions? What are the questions?”

·      10. Me: “Who? What? When? Where? Why? Which? & How? Does that sound too much to handle?”

·      11. Mike: “Sound easy Pop, let see how it goes. Show me.”

·      12. Me: “First step for 6-Wh’s & a How? Is to notice that all the Questions start the letters “WH”. Good. Now grab a piece of paper & like a little kid, trace the 5-fingers of your dominant (right) hand on one side.

·      On the back side trace your Passive (left) hand. Show all ten-fingers, got it?”

·      13. Mike: “It’s easy so far, what the hitch?”

·      14. Me: “It’s supposed to be easy and fast. Now print clearly on the thumbnail of each of the right hand as follows: Index-finger: WHO? Middle-finger WHAT? Ring-finger WHEN? Pinkie: WHERE?. Now the thumbnail of your ‘Thumb’ – WHY? Got it?”

·      15. Mike: “Easy as Pumpkin-Pie. Done, now what?”

·      16. Me: “Other-hand, Index-finger of lefty: WHICH?
And last, Middle-Finger: HOW? Got it?”

·      17. Mike: “Just to be sure, I have do this tracing of both hands each time I finish a book, an article or a lecture. It’s really like taking NOTES to review for the future, right Pop?”

·      18. Me: “Hold up. You left out one critical step. Now step #2 is in one-sentence or so, ANSWER each of seven Questions on the same-2-pages.

·      Now you have the GIST of the learning experience in V-A-K. Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic (touch). When you write the notes, these three-senses make the memory into a Neural-Network, In a Synaptic-connection. Permanent.”

·      19. Mike: “That’s it? Trace-my hands, filling-in the 6 WHs?+ How? Last, in one-sentence or so ANSWER the Questions?”

·      20: Me: “Too hard?”  It’s a scientifically proven way to take notes and remember 51% better & longer an article, book or lecture. It works for Acing Exams, and learning anything you choose. It’s good for school and at work.”

·      21. Mike: “I just expected it to be harder, complicated and take much longer to do.”

·      22. Me: “Let me work on it and I’ll come back with a tougher system to learn & remember knowledge, skills, & information.”

·      23. Mike: “Ok, I going start using it tomorrow in school and let you know what happens. It sounds great.”

·      24. Me: “Mike aced school, exams & grades, and still uses “Six-Wh’s?+How?” many years later. Now it’s your turn to add 51% to your learning skills & long-term memory.”

·      P.S. Remember, the more you LEARN, the more you EARN. See ya.

Have you ever heard of "No-Win, No-Pay"?

“Have you ever heard of “No-Win, No-Pay” Contingency Fee?”
·      1. Do you get emails offering to help you and ask for ‘Money’ upfront?” We get fifty daily.
·      2. In law, especially negligence & some contracts, we use “Contingency Fee Agreements”. No-Win, No-Pay. The secret is that lawyers can calculate which are winners & losers.
·      There is one other type. “Borderline-cases”. They want 100% ‘sure-things’, but will take 20% of the “maybe” cases. Why? The court costs are low, ($100s), and the return can be in the $1,000s.”
·      3. “I was talking to my 15-year old, Mike.”
·      4. “What’s the most, highest fee you ever made on a Contingent Fee Agreement?”
·      5. “That’s privileged information, but over $100K. It was tough, and took years of work, but No-Pay, No-Win turned out to be a “winner” in the end.”
·      6. “I hate to copy your favorite clichés, but “So-what? Who-cares? And, WIIFM? (What’s-in-it-for-me?)”
·      7. “Two points: first, do NOT do business with people & companies that take NO risk, and get paid upfront even if you get Nada-Nothing-Zip. Got it Mike?”
·      8. “Sure, and the second point?”
·      9. “I just learn something and tested it “on-consignment”, without paying first, and it really is weird.
Weird, yet it works, is easy to learn and use, and fast working.”
·      10. “Pop, what-do-you-mean by F-a-s-t. Fast how?”
·      11. “Ok kid, I depend on Left-Brain thinking 95% of the day. You know what that means?”
·      12. “Yup, left-brain is the area that uses modern stuff like logic, reason, analysis, not believing because of the “titles” of people. Being practical & verifying & doing Thought Experiments, right Pop?”
·      13. “On-the-money. The thinking that runs our economy, and uses Math, Science, Technology& Engineering, got it?”
·      14. “Does that means Right-Brain thinking is useless and is only Emotion?”
·      15. “No, in fact what you are going to learn from me now is 95% Right-Brain. That means it involves Pattern-Recognition, Feelings, Spatial relationships, and creativity.”
·      16. “Does that include Imagination and mental-movies?”
·      17. “Sure thing. It’s Yoga, & is based on ideas of “Intuition” meaning not coming from your five-senses. Includes Insights, Inspiration and something called “Epiphany”.”
·      18. “I’ll google Epiphany, but it probably means some-kind of magic, unscientific way. Now tell me what My benefits are from this new Yoga thing you are working on.”
·      19. “If you want to learn it, the benefits of these 2- Tongue Movements are opening up the power of your Intention. It is claims to help you realize your GOALS fast-and-easy.”
·      20. “Does it have a Name, like I call you Pop?”
·      21. “No, but it’s been around for a couple thousand years. You always ask me if it is Normal. Answer is No.
Because it’s personal & cannot be measured. Wanna forget it?”
·      22. “Makes it more interesting. I know it works or you would give it to me, but what is it really good for?”
·      23. “Wait. I’m Not saying using this Tongue Exercise solves all your problems. It just seems to make coincidental stuff seem to happen In-Your-Favor.”
·      24. “Sounds like another weird Hindu thing. I like “crazy”. You’re saying it helps, but not to quit using your left-brain to improve my life, right Pop.”
·      25. “Exactamundo, Mike.”
·      26. “Hit me with the steps. You said it was easy-to-learn and fast-to-kick-in, right?”
·      27. “Baby-Easy. First you have to do a little Stress-Busting. You know, Diaphragmatic-Breathing for 90-seconds. INHALE deeply and on EXHALING, chant aloud,
Four-times the word, Hum-m. Three more breaths, so a total of 16 exhales of the word, Hum-ms.”
·      28. “I know Pop, I use the deep breathing all-the-time. Before tests, interviews, even meeting new people. I relaxes me, and helps me do do my best.”
·      29.”Ok, the first step to the Tongue Exercise. Sit-down, and feet flat on the floor. Listen closely, no questions, just doing until it becomes natural and a simple habit.
·      With your mouth closed, Raise the TIP of your Tongue to ‘behind’ your teeth. Keep your tongue’s tip on the front part of your upper-palette. Can you do that easily?”
·      30. “Yeah, I got that part. Should I shut up and keep it there?”
·      31. “There are 2 exercises, this is the first one, positioning the tongue just behind the upper teeth. That creates your Intention for personal safety, security & protection.
·      31. “Do you believe that Pop?”
·      32. “Your present beliefs are to NOT to accept this exercise. If you start off NOT having an open mind, you rig the test to guaranteed failure. Just do it, and IF it works, then use it. Can you give it a fair test?”
·      32. “Sure, now what?”
·      33. “Keep your tongue up toward the front of your mouth. Now DayDream, imagine something you desire.
·      Mentally visualize acing an exam, like the SATs or winning a scholarship. You can imagine getting a date with beautiful girl, got it? Do it simultaneously. Tongue up, and mental-movie.”
·      34. “Eyes open or closed?”
·      35. “Whatever is easiest for you, Mike.”
·      36. “How long?”
·      37. “Short – 30-seconds. Then stop by dropping your tongue. Wait 10-seconds and repeat again. Total one-minute. That’s all there is. Now you be the judge & jury.
·      38. “What’s the second Tongue Exercise?”
·      39. “Everything exactly the same, but your Tongue is Raised and the Tip remains further back on-the-Roof of your upper palette. Try it now, it’s easy and take about a minute.”
·      40. “Do I chose one or the other or do both for the 7-days?”
·      41. “Both is better, it only takes an extra couple of minutes. The first is for personal protection & success. Second is to activate your RAS (Reticular Activating System) brain site. It attracts you to easily attain you
Goals.”
·      42. “I know, no more questions, just experiment with the
Steps, right?”
·      43. “See me at the end of 7-days, and then we talk, Ok?”
·      44. “Pop, no pep talk about how it changed the lives of people who use it regularly?”
·      45. “Mike, I think it is a serious strategy. It cost nothing to test it. And if it works, use it. If not..”
See ya,
